Regulations compel us to maintain duty logs, but I've never been much of a diarist about my own life. So recording these thoughts about my personal life is a bit out of the norm for me...
I'm currently on assignment to Starbase 400, home of Starfleet's Defense Personnel Data and Support Center (DPDSC, or "DEEP-DISC" as it's often called). DPDSC is best known as the seat of health care administration for all Starfleet personnel and their families, but we also maintain all kinds of personnel data for Starfleet's various directorates so they can manage the workforce and taskings effectively, which is the area I work in.
Things have been in a bit of personal turmoil for me recently, as my commanding officer and friend, LCDR Anne Betheni, chose to take an early discharge from the Fleet in favor of more tantalizing challenges in the private sector. She was a great person to work for. She hitched her last ride home as a Starfleet officer on a science vessel a couple days ago, and the place feels empty without her. She knew so much, she was so capable, and she held things together that I never fully understood. Now I've been asked to assume most of her duties in addition to my own, as well as train a colleague so that, between the two of us, the work gets done, and I don't know if I can fill her shoes.
The good news is that I have a full week of leave coming up. The three of us (me, my wife Lorraine, and my 2 year-old son Alex) are going to holiday on Vebel III, a watery and often foggy planet that promises to be a lot of fun. I know what you're thinking: who in their right mind would vacation on a rainy planet like Vebel III? Lorraine and I actually like that kind of weather. It's good "snuggle" weather...We love it when it's rainy and chilly outside; we like to just curl up together in front of a fireplace, read our favorite book and maybe watch a few vids together.
And of course there's all kinds of interesting sights to see there, like the famous Vebel Obelisk, as well as the museums and bazaars. I hear the main city on Vebel III, Nirvana (yes, it's called that), is quite a lively and friendly place. Can't wait to see it! I'm not normally into vacations and trips and all that, and when Lorraine told me she wanted us to go there, the most I could muster was a shrug of indifference. But when I looked it up in LCARS, I started to get real excited about going there, so much so that I've even been entertaining thoughts of requesting a transfer to some Starfleet facility out there. Too early yet to commit to something like that; I haven't even been there yet. And I'm sure that LCDR Betheni's early retirement -- which has really taken the wind out of my sails -- has something to do with my interest in getting away for a while.
Anyway, Lorraine, Alex and I will hitch a ride on a routine shuttle run to the Sofranco system, where we'll board a Traveller (euphemism for "big cattle car") and warp out to the Vebel system. We've booked a little suite about 27 kilometers away from downtown Nirvana (Ha, ha! Seems appropriate! Always close to happiness, but never quite there!), and we're renting a PTV (personal transport vehicle) to jet around and see the sights.
Well, I've probably burned up enough bits recording this silly log entry. It's about time for me to pick up my son from his caretakers, Thrink and Yaya. I'll bet he had a blast with them today. He always does.
